Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office Press Release

Date:  08/02/2017

A lost wallet has led to the arrest of a Lena man on theft charges according to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday evening July 30 at approximately 8:30pm, Deputies assigned to the NPSO Patrol Division responded to a reported theft of a wallet at a business in the 11000 block of La. Hwy 1 at Cypress, La.

Deputies say upon their arrival, they spoke with the complainant a resident of New York who stopped at the business to purchase gas and other items. While pumping gas into his vehicle the complainant placed and forgot his wallet containing cash, identification and credit cards on the gas pump.

Deputies say as the complainant was leaving the parking lot of the business he realized he forgot his wallet and when he returned to retrieve the wallet it was gone.

Deputies gathered information for an offense report.

The case was turned over to the NPSO Criminal Investigations Division High Tech Crime Unit for investigative purposes.

As the investigation progressed, detectives worked with the store management to review video surveillance.

Detectives retrieved video evidence of the incident and disseminated an image of a person of interest among the patrol division that work in the area for possible identification.

Shortly afterwards deputies assigned to patrols in south Natchitoches Parish identified the person of interest as Kevin D. Johnston, of Lena, La. along with his possible whereabouts in a RV camper on Felix Roge Road near Melrose.

Detectives also learned that Johnston was wanted by State Probation and Parole for Absconding and by the Tenth Judicial District Court for Failure to Appear in Court on June 29, 2017 for a Probation Review.

Detectives then obtained a criminal arrest warrant and search warrant signed by a Tenth Judicial District Court Judge for Johnston’s arrest and to search the RV camper for the stolen wallet.

On Tuesday afternoon at approximately 3:00pm, NPSO Detectives, Task Force Agents and Patrol Deputies went to the RV camper in the 100 block of Felix Roge Road where they came in contact with Johnston. When they informed him they had a search warrant for his person and the camper he reached into his back pocket handing them the stolen wallet.

As a result, Kevin David Johnston, 39, of the 3400 block of La. Hwy 490, Lena, La. was placed under arrested, transported, and booked into the Natchitoches Detention Center charged with Theft, Probation Violation and Failure to Appear in the Tenth Judicial District Court.

Johnston remains in the Natchitoches Detention Center awaiting bond and a court appearance.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the complainant who remained in Natchitoches while the investigation was ongoing came by the Sheriff’s Office to take possession of his wallet. He planned on catching a flight back to New York this morning. He also thanked the NPSO for their efforts in recovering his property.

Detective V. Kay was assisted by the NPSO Patrol Division and NMJDTF in the arrest.
